Cool Papa Bell, born James Thomas Bell, was a legendary American baseball player who excelled in the Negro leagues during the early to midth century.

Considered to have been one of the fastest men ever to play the game, Bell was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in [1]

James was born on May 17, , in Starkville, Oktibbeha, Mississippi, United States, to Jonas Bell and Mary Nichols.[1]

He was the son of Mary Nichols, the fourth of her seven children. He had attended school within the census year and worked as a laborer on the family farm.[2]

As a child, Bell showed a natural talent for baseball, honing his skills in sandlot games and local leagues. In , he moved from Starkville to St. Louis, Missouri, to join his brothers and attend school.
