30 to Oct. 23 last year, three plays of Tony Perez, playwright-painter and book author on casting spells and Wiccan rituals, were staged by Tanghalang Pilipino as a tribute to one of the Filipino artists who received the Cultural Center of the Philippines’ Centennial Artists Awards.

Tanghalang Pilipino’s mounting of the retrospective “Tatlong Tabing: Three Plays by Tony Perez” was a rare honor accorded by the CCP to a living Filipino artist.

He was given the homage for his “contribution to the institution.”

Almost a year after the accolade, on Sept. , Perez—who is also into “mysticism, spirits, and elementals” through his group Spirit Questors—breaks new ground with Ballet Philippines’ production of “Neo-Filipino: Anting,” the ballet company’s second offering for its season.

Perez wrote his unprecedented libretto for a dance production in “Neo-Filipino: Anting” which is a four-movement ballet performance that looks into the world of talismans and amulets of the Filipino mystical traditions, said BP artistic director Paul Alexander Morales.

“In 'Anting,' Tony Perez uses the symbols and stories of our unique Filipino magical traditions,” said Morales, who was introduced into the stage plays and books written by Perez while doing a stint with the theater group Dulaang Talyer.

In an interview, Morales said the idea for a libretto for a ballet show inspired by “anting-anting” (talisman), amulets, and “medalyones” (brass and copper medallions) started during a chance encounter he had with Perez which spiraled into a conversation where the playwright suggested a collaboration.

“This (collaboration) was Tony's suggestion that we loved.

It works well with our idea for a magical season,” he said.

Magic and mysticism

All BP productions for its 43rd season () will have the theme of magic and mysticism. Aside from “Neo-Filipino: Anting,” “Rama Hari,” based on the Indian epic of “Ramayana,” which has the elements of transformation, will be staged from Nov.

30 to Dec. 9 while Shakespeare’s fairies in “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” appear in CCP through the BP performances in February

“Aside from anting-anting, our latest Neo-Filipino production will have great dancing, and this show continues Ballet Philippines' tradition of creating a venue for new Filipino works,” Morales said.

“’Neo-Filipino: Anting’ features excellent collaborations in design and new music and choreography stemming from Tony's libretto.

It uses new live video technology as part of the creative process, giving ‘Anting’ a distinctly contemporary feel and look,” he added.

“I think Tony’s interest in history and spirituality is a good mix for dance where we aspire also, through our bodies for a grounded, rooted, and transcendental experience,” Morales said.

In his first libretto for dance, Perez used various talismans and amulets in each of the four movements of the contemporary ballet interpreting indigenous Philippine “magical” beliefs and myths practiced from the time of Katipunan to the present day.

Images of “taladro” (magical patterns with “oraciones” or prayers drawn on cloth and used by “albularyos”), “medalyones,” and “anting-anting” (talismans) will be projected on screen to provide a backdrop.

“Nang Wala Pang Mundo” is the first movement of “Anting” and tells of the creation of the world based on Melencio T.

Sabino’s work which was published in “Karunungan ng Dios.”

In this movement, “Dios Infinito” visits the world, shuns it, and hides inside the cave.

However, “Dios Ama” instructs “Dios Anak” and the “Tres Persona” to lure “Dios Infinito” out of the cave to baptize him. Despite the resistance of “Dios Infinito” to the order, he ends up baptizing himself. The scene immortalizes itself into the popular medallion known as “Dios Infinito sa Bato.”

“Nang Wala Pang Mundo” is choreographed by Ava Villanueva, director of AirDance who recently came back from a dance project in Japan.

It is set to music by Jed Balsamo, BP’s resident music director who recorded and launched his first album, “Crisostomo Ibarra,” his original music composition for BP’s ballet production of the same title.

As the second movement, “Sinotris Gentillorum” features a young woman who brings home a “taladro” and displays it on the wall.

Suddenly the “taladro” breathes with life, prompting the young woman to interact with the magical figures inscribed on the “taladro.”

Christine Crame, BP associate artistic director and artistic director of Seven Contemporary Dance Company, choreographs the second movement.

“Ang Krus ng Alitagtag,” the “Anting” third movement, traces the supposed origins of the miraculous cross of Alitagtag town in Batangas. The Alitagtag cross is said to bestow protection, power, success, and fame to the one who wears it.

Gerald Mercado, artistic director of E-Dance Theater and honed in both classical and modern ballet, choreographs “Ang Krus ng Alitagtag” while Jakob Rodriguez, music and dance consultant of the Philippine Cultural Workers and Artists Society, is the musical scorer.

The fourth and final movement, “Haring Bakal,” is about a renegade member of the “Haring Bakal” cult who abuses his powers and resorts to banditry.

The member, however, realizes his mistakes and eventually repents in order to become again a responsible member of the society.

BP’s artistic director, Morales, choreographs “Haring Bakal” and the multi-awarded artist, filmmaker, composer, writer, editor and sound designer Jerrold Tarog provides the music.

Tarog’s popular works include “Shake, Rattle, and Roll Punerarya (XII)” and “Parola (XIII),” and “Confessional” () which won Best Film at the 10th Osians Cinefan in New Delhi.
