Mboni Masimba: These have been two great years
What you need to know:
- Next week the show will donate 60 desks to chalula primary school in dodoma as part of its CSR policy that has seen them in many places
It has been two years since ‘The Mboni Show’ first premiered on East Africa TV and since then it has continued to woo more viewers into its fan base.
This month as the show airs its century of episodes, even the founder, Mboni Masimba, is shocked by the rate at which the show has grown.
This year the show finally started showing on DStv’s Africa Magic Swahili every Saturday, something that Mboni says was a promise that she has finally delivered.
“When the show first beamed there were lots of negatives that sent shivers as many people felt it was just one of those wannabes who were trying to run before they can walk,” she says.
In the two years the show has been to almost every corner of Tanzania where she has had very interesting stories to tell.
“I am happy that the show has taken me to almost everywhere in Tanzania; sometimes you never get to appreciate the diversity of this country not until you get there,” says the year-old.
That has not been all; early this year she was in the UK where she produced five shows which involved Tanzania’s envoy to the UK, and Chelsea’s Academy player Adam Nditi.
“Right from the beginning I wanted this show to go places and I am glad that it is finally getting g there at last,” she says.
She adds: These shows outside Tanzania were on the positives that are coming from Tanzanian nationals in the Diaspora who are promoting brand Tanzania in good light.

Apart from telling the stories however, it has also given her the opportunity to touch and change lives of many people around the country, especially the youth.
“During this period through the show we have visited hospitals, schools, orphanages, had Iftar and Christmas dinners with the underprivileged,” adds Mboni.
Next weekend, on the day the show turns two years she will be at Chalula Primary School in Dodoma where she will donate 60 desks to the school.
“These desks could be a drop in the ocean but I am sure it will change a few lives and make learning more enjoyable to these young children.”
But even in what seems to be a glamour filled career, disappointments and challenges have been abundant.
She admits that running a talk show is not an easy task and like any other show business it needs perseverance especially when it comes to production.
“What you seen on the show as the final product takes a lot of effort to put together and over the last one year I have cried a lot, sometimes I even felt like calling it quits,” she says.
She has had to use personal resources to set up the structures which in the next couple of months will include an office building just next to her home in Masaki.
According to her, there were occasions she had to turn to her family and ‘better half’ for support to keep the show running.
“I can’t say that I have finally crossed the bridge, but at least given the way things are going I can see some light at the end of the tunnel,” says Mboni.
Mboni who says she draws her inspiration from the Oprah show, says during the one year her greatest show has been on drugs, something she says is eating up the youth.
She, however, says that other challenges include the fact that most famous people do not want to appear on the show.
“There are many things that young people would like to know about their leaders and it is only through such platforms that they can get to interact with them,” she says.
Critics too have not been few, but according to her much hasn’t been positive criticism in any way.
“Critics are there to show you where you are failing, but in my case these people come in search for ugly things only and that to me is not constructive at all.”
She, however, credits the show for some personal changes that have happened in her life.
“Before this show I was a party girl and I hardly missed an event around town, but with the advent of the show I had to give up so many things including my dress sense,” says Mboni.
